Based on the nine-volume novel series written by Atsuko Asano, No. 6 takes place in the utopia known as No. 6. On his 12th birthday, Shion, a boy raised in the elite and privileged environment of his home, gives shelter to another boy named Nezumi. The next day, Nezumi disappears without a trace and Shion is notified that the boy was a government facility runaway. When he doesn’t report his knowledge, Shion and his mother are stripped of their privileged status and moves to the common areas of the city. Four years pass by when Shion discovers a series of deaths caused by an infection spread via parasitic wasps. The infection causes the victims to age rapidly and then decompose completely soon afterwards. Shion is then arrested on suspicion of insubordination to the city, but instead of being taken to the courthouse, or a police bureau, he is taken to a correctional institute. On the way to the Correctional Institute, Nezumi reappears and rescues Shion from the government workers. It was after this moment that Shion starts to learn about the hidden, dark truths behind No. 6 and about the world outside.
