Review: The Returned [TV Series]

thereturned_showThe Returned opens in a small mountain community which is rocked to its core when several local people who are presumed dead suddenly re-appear at their homes. Despite having passed away some years earlier, these ghostly characters appear in human form, they have not aged, and they are completely unaware of their own fatality. Determined to reclaim their lives and start over, they slowly come to realize that they are not the only ones to have been brought back from the dead.

The French series The Returned (not to be confused with the book of the same name by Jason Mott, or the forthcoming ABC series Resurrection, which all follow the same idea) so far only has one season, but it will grab you from the first episode and keep you on the edge of your seat.

Much like a popular AMC series, The Returned focuses on the return of people who have died. However, unlike zombies who seek fresh meat, these undead are simply ready to go on living their lives. We meet characters like Camille, whose death broke apart her parents’ marriage and traumatized her sister, and Simon, who left behind a daughter he never met. As we learn more about these characters, a serial killer who has been dormant for years suddenly resurfaces and takes another victim, and the water level behind the dam that protects the city is decreasing day by day. Are these events connected, and can either be stopped?

The season finale leaves many questions unanswered, so that may leave you unsatisfied. However, if you enjoy suspense with a taste of the supernatural in a beautiful Alpine setting, it’s worth reading the subtitles.
